Legal Intern (02 August 2022 - 10 February 2023) under the mentorship of Attorney N. Ndebele.
Synopsis
Onkgapile Mokoena is a self-motivated, outcome-driven, academically proficient, multi-faceted (Corporate/Legal), focused, disciplined, energetic, hardworking, and passionate human being who strives to establish a career in the corporate & legal fraternity.
Duties during internship:
- Interview clients and take statements from important witnesses.
- Do legal research and help prepare for presentations
- Takes notes during trial and assists the lawyer in any way possible.
- Perform basic clerical duties such as taking calls and arranging meetings.
- Inform clients and ensure that they understand the mechanics of a legal document.
- Verify the authenticity of ID papers such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses, etc.
- Inform witnesses of the consequences of breaking oaths and prepare an affidavit with the proper format.
- Assist clients with any questions they may have.
- Keep up with new laws, amendments, and any legal news.
- Consult clients on legal problems.
- Perform research on current cases.
- Mediate disputes and negotiate terms.
- Organizing files, making copies, sending and receiving case files, writing emails, and
making phone calls. - Help draft and edit the contract templates.
- Drafted various court documents, invoices, and enclosures at attorneys’ requests.
- Organized legal memoranda and client correspondence.
- Produced retainer agreements, contact letters, and various publications and handouts
for clients. - Performed client intake and client interviews.
- Prepared motions and interrogatories.
- Conducted intake interviews to spot legal issues for presentation at case acceptance.
- Observed and participated in client meetings, mediations, and outreach.
